Car
Once, in 1996, I held a painting exhibition where I showed paintings of traffic-jams. I wanted to approach these traffic-jam paintings in the most modern way possible. The cars were repeating motifs, painted as abstractly as possible. Without tyres, since in a traffic-jam a car becomes a hunk of metal. De Volkskrant newspaper wrote that I had taken off everything that people like about a car. That was the whole idea, because a car is neither beautiful nor fast in a traffic-jam, it degenerates into a thing you sit in, a worthless hunk of metal. I have continued to make paintings of cars and motorways.
